TCM, or Turner Classic Movies, is a cable and satellite access station available in the United States and in several countries throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. It was created in 1994 and is owned by Turner Broadcasting System (itself owned by Time Warner). It is a sister network of TBS, TNT, and CNN, among others. TCM’s programming focuses on classic American films both pre and post 1950. The network has a 24-hour TV schedule without commercial interruption.
TCM was born from Turner Broadcasting System channel TNT. As the channel shifted away from a focus on film programming, owner Ted Turner launched TCM as another cable outlet for his vast film library. The network aims to preserve and promote classic films, and caters to movie-buffs of all ages. A merge with Warner Bros. gave Turner Broadcasting System access to Warner Bros films created after 1949, and it has now acquired the rights to broadcast films produced by Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures Entertainment, StudioCanal, and Janus Films.
Turner Classic Movies is known for its commitment to classic films and promotion of film preservation. The network prides itself in its promotion of cinema through community involvement. Each year, it hosts the TCM Film Festival, inviting viewers and celebrity guests to delight in the greatest films of all time. It also hosts an annual Young Film Composers Competition granting the winning composer the opportunity to re-score silent films under the tutelage of acclaimed composers.
